Common mistakes in English grammar,
and the simple rules that will keep you on track.
We hope you’ll find this a useful resource. But before you go any further, there’s something we’d like to talk about, and that is why have we even set up a grammar clinic?
Damn fine question. After all, some of the best writing comes from saying, “To hell with the rules! I’m going to do things with language that no-one believed possible. I’m going to be the Roger Bannister of writing. The Neil Armstrong of literary adventure. The Per Lindstrom of prose …”
But in our Wordplay© workshops, people often ask us about the rules of language – how it works and what they ought to be doing.
If you come to one of our workshops (which would be fab, we’d love to see you), you’ll quickly find that we don’t think effective writing is all about knowing your tenses, agreements and punctuation.
So we scratched our heads for a bit and thought about the best method of answering the questions we get about grammar, in a way that doesn’t restrict or stifle creativity. And in the end, we thought this might be a helpful means of doing it – providing you with some of the rules, the way we understand them.
But we’ll always be the first to say that if you think your writing will benefit from breaking the rules, go right ahead and do it.
And don’t forget, if there’s anything here we haven’t covered, drop us a line and we’ll see what we can do to help. We update the clinic regularly, so please feel free to come back and check for updates.
Happy writing!
