Common mistakes in English grammar,
and the simple rules that will keep you on track.

American spellings

You have to be wary of these, because Microsoft products are American and their default setting is to spell American.

Liaise has two ‘i’s – even if it gets underlined with red in word.

Computerise, realise, specialise – all ises in fact, should end in ise rather than ize.

We have advisers. The Americans have advisors.

When in doubt, look in an English dictionary. Beware Microsoft spellings – they aren't always right.

NB: Some companies may opt to use American spellings – so if their style book says to use them, they’re the boss.
